What This Is About
When upgrading or adding new Niagara controllers (outstations), it is important to ensure they are compatible with the existing Niagara Supervisor. Mismatched versions can limit functionality and cause unexpected behaviour.
This guide explains, in simple terms, what happens when new Niagara outstations are connected to an older Supervisor.
Key Rule (In Plain English)
A Niagara Supervisor must be the same version or newer than all connected outstations.
This ensures the Supervisor understands the features, data structures, and communication methods used by the newer controllers.
Common Scenario
Older Supervisor
-
Niagara Supervisor 4.12
Newer Outstations
-
Niagara controllers running 4.15
Can they connect?
Partially, but not fully or reliably
What Works vs What Doesn’t
What May Appear to Work
-
Basic connectivity between Supervisor and controller
-
Manual access to a small number of hard (direct) points
What Does Not Work Correctly
-
Supervisory discovery and management of the controller
-
Advanced graphics and navigation
-
Virtual points (sometimes called “virtuals”)
-
Virtual equipment trees
-
Trend logging and alarming via virtual points
In these cases, the Supervisor does not fully understand the newer controller’s structure.
Virtual Points – Important Limitation
Virtual points rely on newer Supervisor features introduced after Niagara 4.12.
If virtual points are used on a newer controller:
-
They cannot be reliably displayed
-
They cannot be alarmed or logged
-
Graphics that depend on them may fail or appear incomplete
Result: Reduced visibility and increased operational risk.
Recommended Solutions
Best Practice (Fully Supported)
-
Upgrade the Supervisor to match or exceed the controller version
(e.g. Supervisor 4.15 with 4.15 controllers)
Temporary / Limited Option
-
Keep all controllers on the same older version as the Supervisor
-
Avoid using virtual points and advanced Supervisor features
Why This Matters
Running newer controllers under an older Supervisor can:
-
Limit system functionality
-
Increase support complexity
-
Reduce long‑term system reliability
-
Restrict future expansion
Version alignment protects your investment and ensures predictable operation.
Forest Rock Recommendation
For stable, maintainable systems, Forest Rock recommends upgrading the Supervisor whenever newer Niagara outstations are introduced.
This ensures:
-
Full feature availability
-
Long‑term supportability
-
Simplified system management
