# Teltonika RUT2xx/RUT9xx – High Mobile Data Usage Troubleshooting & Prevention Guide

A Forest Rock Knowledge‑Based Guide

Applies to: RUT241, RUT240, RUT955, RUT956, and similar models

1. Overview

Unexpected mobile data usage is one of the most common issues encountered when Teltonika routers are used to provide remote access to Niagara/Edge controllers.

This guide walks you through:

  • How to diagnose high data usage

  • How to block all unwanted internet access

  • How to set mobile data limits

  • How to receive SMS warnings before limits are hit

  • How to reset data counters

  • How to identify causes of daily/weekly data spikes

This knowledge base guide is compiled from the Teltonika Support Portal.

VIDEO VIEWING NOTE:
If a training section includes a video link and you want to watch the video while following the Forest Rock training notes, simply right click the video link and choose the option to open it in a split screen window. The video will appear on the right side of your screen, allowing you to follow along with the notes at the same time.

2. Why Am I Seeing High Data Usage?

Before applying fixes, here are the top causes of excessive data consumption on RUT241/RUT955 units:

Common Causes

  • Cloud services or NTP servers repeatedly accessed

  • Third‑party devices inside the panel using the router for internet access

  • Auto‑updates (Windows, Linux, PLCs, HMIs)

  • Port scanning or brute‑force attempts if the router is exposed to the internet

  • VPN tunnels left open for long periods

  • Remote access software (TeamViewer etc.) passing traffic through the router

  • Misconfigured firewalls allowing outbound data

This guide provides the steps you can follow to eliminate all of these.

3. Accessing the Router

Video Reference: 0:01–0:20

  1. Open your web browser

  2. Enter the default IP (commonly):

    192.168.1.1

  3. Log in with administrator credentials

  4. You will see the main Status → Overview page

4. Reviewing Mobile Data Usage

Where to check data consumption

Status → Mobile → Data Usage

Look for:

  • Days with large spikes

  • Total monthly consumption

  • Which SIM is currently active

  • Which interface generated the traffic

If you see large spikes on certain days only, this usually means:

📌 External services triggered unexpected traffic,
or
📌 A device connected to the router tried to reach the internet.

5. Blocking All Internet Access (Recommended)

Your use-case:
The router is only needed to provide access to an Edge controller’s web UI.
You do NOT need full internet access.

Goal:

Allow inbound remote access (OpenVPN/WireGuard/Port Forwarding etc.)
❌ Block all outbound internet traffic

5.1 Create a Firewall Rule to Block All Outbound WAN Traffic

Network → Firewall → Traffic Rules

Add a new rule:

Name:
Block_All_Internet

Action:
Reject

Source Zone:
lan

Destination Zone:
wan

Save & Apply.

This ensures:

  • Niagara/Edge UI is accessible remotely

  • Nothing inside the panel can “phone home”

  • Router will still respond to remote management if allowed via inbound rules

6. Enabling Mobile Data Limits

Video Reference: 0:30–1:40

This is the most effective method to prevent surprise charges.

Network → Mobile → Mobile Data Limit

6.1 Enable Data Connection Limit

  1. Tick Enable Data Limit

  2. Choose your type:

    • Monthly (recommended)

    • Weekly

    • Daily

  3. Set your start date (typically the 1st)

  4. Set your limit (example):

    500 MB / month

  5. Apply changes

Once the limit is hit:

  • The SIM card data shuts off

  • If a second SIM exists, router switches automatically

7. Configuring SMS Warnings (Optional but Highly Recommended)

Video Reference: 1:41–2:10

To avoid hitting a hard cutoff unexpectedly:

Steps:

  1. Enable SMS Warning

  2. Enter your threshold (example):

    450 MB

  3. Enter your mobile phone number

  4. Save

You will receive an SMS notification when approaching your limit.

8. Resetting Data Counters

Video Reference: 2:19–2:34

Important note:

The data counter does NOT reset automatically when you disable/enable the feature.

When making changes:

  1. Press Clear Data Limit

  2. Save

This resets the internal usage database.

9. How to Identify What’s Using the Data

Unfortunately, Teltonika routers do not provide per‑service deep packet inspection.
But you can identify likely causes:

9.1 Check System Logs

Status → System Logs

Look for:

  • Repeated outbound attempts

  • DNS queries

  • VPN reconnect loops

  • Failed NTP or remote cloud connections

9.2 Check Connected Devices

Status → Network → LAN

Look for:

  • Unrecognised devices

  • A PC or laptop plugged into the router

  • Local equipment generating outbound traffic

9.3 Check Services Running on Router

Services → (SMS, VPN, IoT, Modbus, Remote Management)

Disable any unused:

  • VPN tunnels

  • Auto-reboot scripts

  • Remote management services

  • Data-to-cloud services

To avoid unnecessary support calls and data overages:

✔ Disable Wi-Fi

Network → Wireless → Disable

✔ Disable all router cloud features (unless needed)

System → Cloud Solutions

✔ Disable automatic firmware checks

System → Firmware

✔ Block all outbound traffic

(Section 5 in this guide)

✔ Set monthly limit + SMS alert

(Section 6 & 7)

✔ Use VPN for remote access

Instead of open ports.

11. Summary Checklist

Task

Status

Router login and overview checked

Data usage reviewed

Outbound internet blocked

Mobile data limit set

SMS alert configured

Data counter reset

Unwanted services disabled

VPN-based remote access only

12. When to Contact Support

Contact support only if:

  • Mobile data continues to increase after outbound internet is blocked

  • Unknown devices keep appearing on the LAN

  • Logs show repeated WAN traffic from Teltonika internal services

  • SIM provider confirms abnormal data behaviour

Otherwise, all common issues are resolved by the steps above.
