Building Better Engineers | Creating Smarter Buildings.
INTRODUCTION
Modern buildings rely on intelligent systems that bring together comfort, safety, efficiency, and seamless operation. At the Forest Rock Learning Academy, we help learners understand how these systems work, how they communicate, and how they shape the environments we live and work in. Our training demystifies the technology behind smart buildings, giving learners the confidence to work with automated controls, connected devices, and integrated building services.
As buildings become more advanced, the need for skilled professionals who can design, maintain, and optimise these systems continues to grow. The Academy provides clear, practical learning pathways that explain how different building services interact, how digital control platforms support day‑to‑day operation, and how intelligent monitoring leads to better performance and energy use. Whether you’re new to the field or expanding your expertise, our learning academy content can help to equip you with the knowledge to work effectively in today’s connected building landscape.
So welcome to the Forest Rock Learning Academy, your dedicated learning hub for all smart building automation systems. As we mentioned in the intro, the buildings around us are becoming much smarter, much more connected, and more reliant on new leading edge technology than ever before. From traditional Building Management Systems and Industrial IoT to energy monitoring, open protocols, intelligent lighting, and digital integration, today's smart buildings demand industry professionals who understand not just individual systems, but how everything works together.
That's where the Forest Rock Learning Academy comes in.
Our mission is very simple: To give engineers, technicians, consultants, system integrators, and building professionals the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed to thrive in modern smart-building environments.
So whether you are taking your first steps into building automation or just looking to expand decades of industry experience, the Academy provides a structured learning journey designed around
real-world engineering challenges. We focus on helping you to understand not only the technologies themselves, but also how they interact to create efficient, responsive, secure, and future-ready buildings.
Unlike traditional training that focuses solely on products, the Forest Rock Learning Academy is built around practical engineering knowledge. The content is shaped by years of experience supporting customers, solving integration challenges, commissioning systems, troubleshooting networks, analysing energy performance, and delivering successful smart-building projects.
Here, you'll explore the core disciplines that underpin today's intelligent buildings, including:
-
Building Management Systems (BMS)
-
Niagara Framework Engineering
-
Industrial IoT and Edge Technologies
-
Energy Monitoring and Management
-
BACnet, Modbus, KNX, MQTT and Open Protocols
-
Networking and Cybersecurity Fundamentals
-
Sensors, Metering and Field Devices
-
Smart Building Integration Strategies
-
Troubleshooting and Best Practices
-
Emerging Technologies and Industry Trends
Each learning section is designed to help build genuine competence, helping you understand how devices communicate, how data flows through systems, and how individual technologies combine to deliver meaningful outcomes for building owners and occupants.
Most importantly, this Academy exists to share knowledge that has been gained through real projects, real technical support cases, and real engineering experience. Many of the lessons that make the biggest difference in the field aren't found in product manuals. They come from solving problems, learning from challenges, and understanding what works in practice.
As the Academy grows, so too will its library of technical articles, learning pathways, best-practice guides, videos, case studies, and engineering insights. Content will be driven by the questions we hear most often, the challenges our customers face, and the technologies shaping the future of smart buildings.
Whether your goal is to develop new skills, solve complex technical problems, improve system performance, or simply stay current in a rapidly evolving industry, you'll find resources here to help you move forward with confidence.
This is more than a training platform.
It's a growing community built around learning, innovation, knowledge sharing, and the future of smarter buildings.
Welcome to the Forest Rock Learning Academy. Let's build better engineers and create smarter buildings together.
